What Can You Do at WGBH? Well, we meet again WGBH. For our second for radio pledges, and we did a total of 6 hours, rather than 3. Talk about intense work on a Saturday! We had loads of fun, though. Around 2 or 3 o'clock , phone calls starting to come in and let me tell you, it was hectic, really hectic. The calls soon slowed, so we chatted and talked for the rest of the day. In the end, our call results were: Vanessa D.-12, Thuy-11, Audane-9, Kerri-8, Vanessa R.-8 and me-8. We left at six and were excited for next Sunday's event, when we would go live on TV! The day had finally come! We were going to be live on TV, where viewers would see us taking pledges from viewers like you. I arrived there and saw the other girls, and we went into a conference room where instructors showed us a brief documentary of the history of WGBH. Next, we met the Fullbright Association, another group of volunteers, and we all headed upstairs to the studio. When we entered the studio for the very first time we were speechless. Seeing all the cameras, lights, and background amazed us all. Sitting down at the computers, we put on our headphones and waited for calls. The cameras kept on moving around the studio and captured all of us. The host would talk about all the gifts callers would receive when they pledge. But guess what really made my day? A call from Ms. Fillion! The evening progressed and we continued to receive calls. At the end, a new group of volunteers came and we left the studio.
At the snack area, I asked all the BLACCers' total pledge amount since we were competing to see who got the most. Overall, I won with the most pledges. As for the total pledge amount that BLACC received, we received a total of $11, 016! Could you believe that? The total amount for it each person is: Anthony (me)-$3220, Vanessa R.-$2735, Audane-$2301, Thuy-$1525, and Vanessa D.-$1235. Finally came the raffle drawings, and everyone except Vanessa D. won prizes. She got the best and most wonderful gift in the world, though-a hug from one of the instructors. After saying goodbye, we left and were still excited about being live on TV. When I got home, I watched the tape that I set to record the telethon. I couldn't believe my eyes; I was actually on live TV! It was a great experience and every time we go to WGBH, it seems as if we learn something new. So why not join and be part of the fun? -Anthony Pan, gr. 10 |
